The Human Body – 9/10

the human body

Made for children but equally useful for adults, The Human Body by Tinybop is a basic anatomy app full of knowledge.  Paying the $2.99 download price will allow you access to several important body systems including the digestive, circulatory, respiratory, skeletal, and muscular systems.  An extra $.99 in-app purchase gains you access to the urogenital system.

Exploring the human body is made really easy with The Human Body.  With nice graphics and many features, you can learn even without memorizing the names of bones and body parts.  The Human Body is fully interactive, allowing users to test how the body reacts to stimuli (such as being poked with a pin or harassed by a mosquito, eating various foods, running or walking, etc.).  Each system comes with its vocabulary, and tapping the words will make them fall to the bottom of the screen.  If you really know what you’re doing, then you could try to place the words back at the correct places in the body.  You can also zoom into specific components of the body systems, and cut through cross sections to see exactly what’s going on there.  My favorite part is looking into the stomach and watching the food and digestive juices slosh around to the shaking of my iPhone.

Although The Human Body sure is an expansive resource for anatomy, there are unfortunately a few bad things about this app.  For starters, there are relatively few instructions considering how many features there are, which makes it difficult to take advantage of all of them.  Perhaps the developers were trying to stimulate and force curiosity to make users figure out the features via exploration, but I think just a brief tutorial at the beginning would do wonders to the usefulness of The Human Body.  Also, the app tends to crash a lot, which is never a good thing.  But with simple fixes of those two problems, The Human Body would be one of the best of its kind.  In the meanwhile, 9/10!
