Sonic Dash is a Sonic the Hedgehog game for the iOS that mimics the gameplay of Temple Run but adds in that classic Sonic style too. It is free from the App Store. Sonic Dash is a fine game, but don’t expect anything novel or too interesting. You swipe left and right to collect rings and avoid obstacles, down to get through enemies, and up to jump. Every once in a while there’s a ring bank (almost like a checkpoint) because if you run into enemies, you lose all your rings. With these rings you can buy alternate characters to use, or boosts/upgrades to make your experience easier or to help you along the way. As expected, there is a freemium twist to the game, but it actually does not end up affecting the game as much as we’ve seen, which turns out to actually be alright for once. There are also goals added to this game to try to point you in some direction, however they’re not the greatest of goals. Whereas you might expect the goals to be something like “collect 500 rings in one run,” they are more to the tune of “use this power-up that you can only get by spending the rare currency that you’ll eventually have to buy to keep up.” This makes the whole level business in Sonic Dash not all that relevant to skill, but rather to money spending. It’s hard not to compare it to Temple Run or other games because it is very similar in style; but comparing something to Temple Run always makes it look worse than it is. Keeping this in mind, Sonic Dash still just doesn’t stack up. All it has going for it is the fun-here-and-there gameplay and the brand name of Sonic the Hedgehog. 4/10.
