Design This Home is a free app that allows users to create their very own virtual house (it got me through some long plane travel). Room by room, you can create a living room, dining room, kitchen, office, kid’s bedroom, baby room, master bedroom, bathroom, and master bathroom. Furniture must be placed where appropriate, such as a table in the dining room and appliances in the kitchen. If you want to, I suppose you could get wacky and mix up the furniture in different rooms. It’s all up to you. Your house is very customizable, with pretty much everything up for grabs. You may change wallpapers and flooring, add rugs, hang up indoor basketball hoops…. Really anything you can wish for is available. However, not all can be used without paying. Here’s the catch: the green money in-game currency is acquired every so often as a “salary.” This is usually every several hours. The best of items can only be bought with the coin in-game currency, which you can come across in very small quantities without paying. But in order to buy cool items, you must pay real money for these coins. Ah, the world of in-app purchases. Another feature of this game that I like is the Tasks menu. Pressing this clipboard icon will bring up a list of things to do to get more money, XP, and sometimes even coins. These tasks are things like “hang up a picture in the dining room” or “upgrade the desk in the office.” The tasks really guide you through the creation of your house. Now for another con. In an effort to make this game realistic, you actually have to wait up to 24 hours for your items to be delivered. That’s absurd. I say it all the time, and I’ll say it again. I HATE when apps make me wait to play their games. (Actually, I stopped having to wait because changing my phone’s clock ahead makes the in-game timers reduce too. Yes it’s cheating, but I’d rather not wait.) One last thing is the upkeep. Just as a regular house needs cleaning and repair, so does your virtual house. Plants must be watered too. It’s just a few simple taps of an icon, but it gets you XP. More XP means you level up, which unlocks more items to buy for your house. Overall I think this game is good for a free app, with a lot of details attended to, but the waiting is enough to bump it down to a 7/10.
